  7.   About Mode ?

  9.    Mode ? is a system extension that simplifies switching your Macintosh between 24- and 32-bit addressing.

  11.    Normally, to achieve that result you have to restart your Mac, wait for the Finder to come up, open the Memory control panel, select the desired addressing mode and restart again. If you use both system 6 and system 7 on the same Mac, or need to switch your system 7 to 24-bit mode to run old applications, this process is just too long. This is where Mode ? comes in.

  13.    Mode ? is configured to load ahead of all other extensions. If a key requesting a different addressing mode than the current one is held down, Mode ? will perform the switch and immediately restart the computer in the new addressing mode.

  18.    On startup, Mode ? displays an icon indicating the current addressing mode. For 32-bit addressing the icon will look like this:

  30.    If the '2' key is held down and the Mac is in 32-bit mode, it will be switched to 24-bit mode and restarted, after indicating the switch by replacing the icon with the following one:

  36.    If the '3' key is held down and the Mac is in 24-bit mode, it will be switched to 32-bit mode and restarted, after indicating the switch by replacing the icon with the following one:

  42.    If the Mac doesn't support 32 bit addressing, the extension icon is displayed with an 'X' and normal operation is disabled.

  45.    Installation

  47.    To install Mode ?, drag it to your system folder and restart your Mac. Under system 7, let the Finder put Mode ? in the Extensions folder within the system folder.

  49.     Mode ? should load before any extension managers, since extension managers might mistake the restart operation for a bomb. Mode ? contains an invisible character in its name, which will cause it to load before all other extensions in most cases.
